Bitcoin does not care about cantonal borders. An app works the same in Chur as in Geneva, and a transfer from a Swiss account to an exchange takes no longer from Frauenfeld than from Lugano. Even so, where you live makes a difference: to your taxes, to your bank, to cash options and to whether you can actually spend bitcoin in daily life. This overview shows what sets apart the ten regions that have their own guide, which is particularly useful if you have just moved here and are still working out how your new canton does things.
Why your canton still matters
Tax. Privately held crypto is subject to An annual tax levied by cantons and municipalities on your net assets. Crypto counts at its value on 31 December., which cantons and municipalities levy at their own rates. The federal ground rules from the Swiss Federal Tax Administration apply everywhere, but some cantons publish their own guidance: Basel-Stadt in January 2026, Zug in 2022, Ticino back in 2018. Where coins go on the tax form differs too. Our guide to crypto tax in Switzerland covers the basics.
Your bank. A growing number of cantonal banks offer bitcoin straight from online banking: Zuger Kantonalbank since October 2023, St. Galler Kantonalbank since November 2023, Luzerner Kantonalbank since March 2024, Zürcher Kantonalbank since September 2024 and Ticino's BancaStato since July 2026. The cantonal bank of Neuchâtel went the other way and has not allowed crypto-trading payments through its accounts since June 2024. Our overview of crypto-friendly banks has the details.
Cash and daily life. Crypto ATMs cluster in the big cities; according to a 2025 PostFinance blog post, Coin ATM Radar counted around 130 machines nationwide. Where you can pay in bitcoin depends heavily on the place, as the community map BTC Map shows. Only a few public bodies accept crypto: the canton of Zug for taxes and the city of Lugano for all its invoices. See our guide to paying taxes in bitcoin.
Community and events. The big conferences are spread across the country: the Crypto Valley Conference in Rotkreuz, the Plan ₿ Forum in Lugano, the CV Summit in Zurich, Le Paradigme Bitcoin in Neuchâtel and the Swiss Bitcoin Conference in Kreuzlingen. On top of that, the Bitcoin Association Switzerland and local Einundzwanzig groups hold regular meetups.

What if your canton is missing?
Graubünden, Valais, Aargau, Fribourg, Solothurn, Jura and other cantons have no page of their own, because we found too little documented local crypto infrastructure there for a separate guide. That is no real drawback, as most purchases happen online anyway. The simplest route is a bank transfer from a Swiss account to an exchange or app. If you are thinking of TWINT, note that none of the exchanges and apps we checked accept it for crypto purchases; what remains are workarounds such as vouchers or peer-to-peer marketplaces. Cash can be exchanged at bitcoin ATMs or at any SBB ticket machine, for amounts from CHF 20 to 500.
Wherever you live: you open an exchange account online with your ID and fund it by bank transfer.
